Video - Stars

For now this is the last in my video collection from Riverside.  This was a bittersweet moment as it was the last I would play here as God was calling me to a new ministry opportunity.  I am thankful that I got to share it with my friend Jeremy Mohr.  Here is our cover of "Stars" by the David Crowder Band.

Stars Lyrics

you should see the stars tonight
how they shimmer shine so bright
against the black they look so white
comin down from such a height
to reach me now, reach me now

you should see the moon in the flight
cuttin cross the misty night
softly dancin in sunshine
reflections of this light
reach me now, you reach me now

and how could such a thing
shine its light on me
and make everything beautiful again

and you should feel the sun in the spring
comin out after a rain
suddenly all is green
sunshine on everything
i can feel it now, i feel you now

and how could such a thing
shine its light on me
and make everything beautiful

and you should hear the angels sing
all gathered round their king
more beautiful than you could dream
i've been quietly listening
you can hear 'em now, i hear em now

and how could such a king
shine His light on me
and make everything beautiful
and i wanna shine
i wanna be light
i wanna tell you it'll be alright
and i wanna shine and i wanna fly
just to tell you now
it'll be alright, it'll be alright
it'll be alright.

cus i got nothing of my own to give to you
but this light that shines on me shines on you
and makes everything beautiful, again.
it'll be alright, it'll be alright.

Video - Where Were You

This video is really special to me.  For the 10th anniversary of September 11 we were able to do something completely different than we've ever done in church before, play a country song by Alan Jackson.  Now that may not seem like a big deal for some people, but it's not a normal thing to do in a church service.

Anyway, this song set up a remembrance video that you can find in one of my older post here.

Here is Alan Jackson's "Where Were You" as played by me and the Riverside Band.

Video - All I Can Say

I've been going through my computer this week, cleaning out old files and such, and ran across some videos that I had shot while down at Riverside Church in the New Orleans area.  So over the next few days I'll be putting them up here for your enjoyment.
This first video is a solo of me playing David Crowder's "All I Can Say"

Here are the lyrics to this wonderful song

Verse 1:
Lord I'm tired
So tired from walking
And Lord I'm so alone
And Lord the dark
Is creeping in
Creeping up
To swallow me
I think I'll stop
Rest here a while

Chorus:
And this is all that I can say right now
And this is all that I can give

Verse 2:
And didn't You see me cry'n?
And didn't You hear me call Your name?
Wasn't it You I gave my heart to?
I wish You'd remember
Where you sat it down

Verse 3:
I didn't notice You were standing here
I didn't know that
That was You holding me
I didn't notice You were cry'n too
I didn't know that
That was You washing my feet

Build Your Own Clone

Ok, so maybe the title got your attention or maybe it didn't.  Anyway, this post is about a website I found that sells kits for one to build a clone of a popular guitar effect.  Well, since I like to play around with electronic stuff I really wanted to give this a try, so I bought a clone of a popular distortion pedal.  The company said this was their easiest pedal to assemble but the real reason I got it was the fact that it was the cheapest!

I had a lot of fun putting it together over the course of a couple of days and it turned out to work pretty nicely.  It's also something that I will most likely use in my pedal chain, maybe not what it was designed for, but what would work best for me, a boost pedal.  Below are some pictures of the progress.  I hope to be able to get some audio/video clips soon so you can hear the magic!

Here's the kit all together straight out of the box

Work station.  Notice the necessities, Dr.Pepper and the MacBook

Circuit board assembled.

Insides assembled

Outside view.

Guts fully assembled.

Final.  One of the changes I made that you won't normally see in guitar effects is the green LED.  I had a few extra from an old project and figured I give it a little bit of a different color.  It works nicely.
If you would like to get your own clone, go to www.buildyourownclone.com. They have tons of great guitar effects to build for any guitar enthusiast.

Passion: White Flag

As most of you know, I’m a big supporter of the Passion Movement.  So it will be no surprise to you that I think you should all go get the new album recorded at Passion 2012 titled “White Flag.”
It’s got a great lineup of songs that range from fast and energetic, to amazingly written ballads.  And if you know me at all, you’ll definitely not be surprised that my favorite is the loud, rockin’ song titled “Not Ashamed” by Kristian Stanfill who is becoming one of my favorite worship leaders.
You can get White Flag here.
I highly recommend it!
  1. Not Ashamed - Kristian Stanfill
  2. White Flag - Chris Tomlin
  3. Jesus, Son of God - Chris Tomlin & Christy Nockels
  4. How I Love You - Christy Nockels
  5. All This Glory - David Crowder* Band
  6. Lay Me Down - Chris Tomlin
  7. You Revive Me - Christy Nockels
  8. One Thing Remains - Kristian Stanfill
  9. Yahweh - Chris Tomlin
  10. Sing Along - Christy Nockels

27 Million

There's a new song out by Matt Redman and LZ7 titled 27 Million.  The hope of the song is to shine as much light as possible into the problem of human trafficking.  Today it is estimated that over 27 Million people are stuck in modern day slavery

I would highly recommend you download the song and listen closely to the lyrics.  Be a voice for the voiceless and share this with everyone you know.

Small Steps

Well, by now I've told Riverside that I will be stepping out as Music Minister.  My wife and I have been given an opportunity to work for an amazing ministry called Clear Camps and we feel that God is calling us to travel with this ministry this summer.  If you recall, my last post was about saying "Yes" to God and we feel that this is just a small step in where he is taking us.

I have to be honest though.  I'm a little bit scared.  As of now we don't have any income lined up and that takes away any sense of security I had in a job.  This is where we fully believe that God will provide for us.  He already has in amazing ways with a place to stay thanks to our incredible family.  But now comes the matter of food and various bills that we can't 100% get rid of.  The fun part is I fully believe that God will provide, I just don't know how.

And if you're from Riverside and reading this, which I really hope some of you read my blog, I pray that my life can be an example to you of what it means to take a step of faith.  Yes, it's scary and frightful.  No, I don't exactly know where I'll end up.  But that doesn't really matter to me anymore because, if I say no to God here, I'm actually disobeying his calling in my life, and we wouldn't want that now would we.

I have fully enjoyed my time at Riverside.  I am grateful for the two years I was able to spend here. You have taught me much more than I could have ever taught you.  As I close I want to leave you with the words of a song we sang this morning...

My heart will sing no other name but the name of Jesus!

Saying "Yes"

This past week I had to opportunity to take a couple of great guys to Passion 2012.  To be honest I really just wanted to take them because I absolutely love the Passion Conferences.  From the music to the messages from people like Francis Chan, Beth Moore, John Piper and Louie Giglio, the Passion Conferences have become a movement for the younger generations.  Over the years I have learned many great things from Louie Giglio and his team, this year was no different and I hope I can share some of that with you.
To start, I have to tell you that I absolutely love all of the new music that comes from a Passion event.  Tomlin, Redman, and the whole team write some amazing lyrics, Christ-Centered lyrics that connect with people.  I also love the rock based musical style but this year we were also able to have Christian hip-hop artist, Lecrae, lead in one of the main sessions.  Now I’m not really a big fan of hip-hop music, but if it helps connect the Gospel to somebody, then I’m all for it!  (And on a side note, the Passion 2012 album coming out in March is going to be amazing!)
The first night, or kick-off session, was different then any I had ever been a part of before.  I’ve been to quite a few, 7 Passion events to be exact, but this one had a completely different vibe from the beginning.  As always, there was a big buildup into the first song, but the focus this time was on the Scripture, the Living Breathing Word of God.  Now the Word is always the most important thing at a Passion event but this year it was purposefully the biggest thing. Not the music, not the speakers, but the Word.  One of the main morning sessions included a full reading of the book of Ephesians for the message.  We were asked to read along and at each chapter break, just to simply allow Jesus to speak to us through His Word.
Ok, so now back to the first night.  The buildup into the first song, “Here for You” was amazing.  I think I’ve said that already but thought I’d say it again.  After the music set, Louie came up to set the tone for the conference.  Louie was saying that Jesus is here to bring us back to life.  There would be no funerals coming from Passion 2012. Ephesians 2 says that without Christ, we are dead.  Not unchurched.  Not unclean.  But fully dead.  And it is time for us to rise up and spread the news of Jesus throughout the country.
As the conference continued, we learned of the 27 Million people captured in modern day slavery.  This was the focus of the Do Something Now campaign (DSN), which seeks to empower students to do something now by giving money towards certain causes or ministries that have the desire to physically be the hands and feet of Jesus.  This year the goal was to raise 1 Million dollars.  Here I’ll say that it’s not often you see students wait in hour long lines to give away money.  Well, the wait paid off as the students raised over 2.5 Million dollars toward DSN by the end of the conference.  We were also told by Louie that they let a few “adults” into the event, and one was so inspired by the students giving by giving $500,000 themselves, we were able to raise a little over 3 Million dollars toward ending modern day slavery, or human trafficking.
Now if hearing that there are 27 Million people enslaved in our world today kind of throws you back, don’t worry, I was there too before this conference.  We thought slavery was over.  It turns out that we haven’t been paying attention.  Now the church has a huge opportunity to step up and be the hands and feet of Jesus.  (On this subject I hope to do some research and find out about local stats on human trafficking and blog about them soon.)
By now you’re probably wondering why I titled this post Saying “Yes.”  Well, during the conference, Louie was talking to 44,000+ college students about taking part in what God is doing now.  Not tomorrow.  Not next month.  Not in another season of life, but NOW.  During this, I was compelled to simply say, “Yes.” I have no idea what God has in store for me and my wife, Bethany, but we both just want to say YES to God.
We are finally taking [god] out of the box.  As my friend Kevin says, we believe in the Big G god, and it’s this god that sent His son to die for the world.  Jesus came to give life and the whole world needs to hear about it!  So, we are saying, “Yes” to Jesus.  Wherever He leads we will go.  Because if we don’t, then we are living outside of God’s plan for our lives and subsequently, in sin and that’s a place I don’t want to be.
So that’s just a little taste of my Passion 2012 experience.  I hope the guys I took allowed God to speak to them through this time also.  If I get a chance, I’ll tell you more later.

See you next time.

The Tales of a Taylor

so about 10 years ago i was given one of the most awesome gifts a kid in 11th grade could get.  my grandmother bought me an acoustic guitar.  now wasn't just any acoustic guitar.  she sent me to the music store with an uncle and just told me to find a guitar i like.  at the time i had no idea what to look for in a guitar, i just wanted it to sound and feel good.  well i guess i'm naturally drawn to expensive equipment because after we got back, i realized that it was a $2400 guitar!

in case you're wondering, or care to know these things, i got a Taylor 714CE.  it has a cedar top which gives it an amazingly deep tone compared to other taylor guitars.

well my grandma bought me this guitar because i had been leading our youth group worship band for about 2 or 3 months borrowing our youth minister's acoustic.  i had a decent electric at the time but it wasn't suitable to use leading by myself, so she bought me one.  so needless to say, this guitar has a good bit of value to me, both monetarily and sentimental.

I tell you all of that to tell you this...

a couple of weeks ago, due to a careless mistake, i put a nice big CRACK on the side of my Taylor.  when I saw it happen, I literally almost cried.  Now i've put some dings and scratches in it over the years, but I've never cracked a guitar before.

after calling the Taylor factory I realized that it would cost way too much to send up to them to repair so I called around and brought it to a local guy at the New Orleans Guitar Center.  after we looked at it together he told me that the damage was mostly cosmetic.  he suggested that I mark the ends of the crack and watch it.  if the crack grows then to do something but he didn't think it would.

those of you that know my wife well will laugh good at this, but she jokingly told me to put a band-aid on the crack until it got fixed.  if it were any other guitar than my taylor i would consider it but this is my 'serious' guitar.  no stickers on the case, and definitely no band-aids on the crack.

but my wife's sense of humor reminds me that my guitar is just a tool for the work God has called me to do.  no matter how much money the thing is worth, reduced down, it's made of wood, metal, and glue, nothing more.

so now, i'm playing with an injured Taylor but that doesn't really matter.  all the cracks and dings add character not only to the guitar, but to its owner who is continually being reminded that the material things we have in this world hold no eternal value.  whatever we have, we don't really own.  we are just managers of what God has given us.

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6:19-21

the beginning

so, hello blogging world. i have been on facebook for a long time and twitter is now a new thing, but i've never thought about blogging.  but lately i've been hanging around people who blog so i thought i would give it a try.

since i really have no idea where to start i guess i give you a little bit of info about me.

first and foremost, i'm a christian, a follower of Jesus Christ, not just your typical american church attender. i believe that following Jesus is a 24/7, 365 thing, not just something that takes place on Sunday mornings.

second, i am a musician.  i like all types of music but my favorite is classic southern rock.  i play guitar.  maybe one day i'll post some pics of my guitars and amp rig.

where following Christ and being a musician meet, is my job.  i am called to be a worship leader in the local church.  currently, i am leading at a great church in the new orleans area called riverside church. i love the people and i know that i'll be here for a while.

last, but surely not least, is that i have the most wonderful wife a guy could ask for. we got married this past july after dating for 3 1/2 years.

ok, well since i don't really know how to start a blog post or how to end it, i guess now is the time i'll say goodbye,

see ya next time.
